DGT Practical Driving Test in Spain: 2026 Guide (in English)
Passed the theory test and not sure what comes next? This guide explains the practical driving test for the Spanish B licence: how to book it, what happens on the day, how faults are scored and what to do if you do not pass the first time.
The short version
The practical exam (examen práctico) is a drive on open roads with an examiner. You need at least 25 minutes of driving within a 30-minute slot. One serious (eliminatoria) fault means you fail. The official tasa 2.1 is 94,05 € and covers two attempts.
Still studying the theory? Practise the theory test in English before you book.
What the practical test is
The practical test is the prueba de control de aptitudes y comportamientos en circulación: the examiner assesses how you handle the vehicle and how you behave in traffic. It is run on open roads, using urban streets, interurban roads outside built-up areas and, where possible, motorways or dual carriageways. The theory exam only tests what you know; this test checks that you apply it safely.
How to book the practical test
The usual route is through a driving school (autoescuela), which submits the application and arranges your date. The DGT also allows you to apply as a private candidate (por libre). Whichever route you take, check the current steps on the DGT electronic headquarters or with your local Jefatura. Practical test slots and documents can differ between provinces.
Paying the tasa and requesting the test are separate steps from booking a Jefatura appointment (cita previa). Keep the payment receipt; you will need it for the application.
Free, no sign-up. Mock exams and weak-topic analysis before your practical test.
What happens on the day
The whole slot lasts 30 minutes. It includes reception, a short check of the vehicle and then the driving, which must last at least 25 minutes on open roads. The examiner may also ask you to carry out special manoeuvres for permiso B.
Before you start, the examiner may check:
- your documents, including your identity document and the application;
- the vehicle's basic safety items, such as the reflective vest (chaleco reflectante) and portable warning triangle or light (dispositivos portátiles de preseñalización de peligro);
- lights, tyres, horn and the main fluid levels.
Arrive early and bring the vehicle in a roadworthy condition. A vehicle defect that affects safety can stop the test from starting.
How the practical test is scored
Every fault is recorded in one of three categories, using the DGT scoring criteria:
- Eliminatoria (E): any behaviour that endangers your own safety or that of other road users, and serious or very serious breaches of road signs. One is enough to fail.
- Deficiente (D): a breach that significantly obstructs other traffic or affects safe following distances.
- Leve (L): a minor breach of the rules, or incorrect use of the vehicle's controls.
You are declared NO APTO with one eliminatoria fault; with two deficiente faults; with one deficiente and five leve faults; or with ten leve faults.
Can I take the practical test in English?
We have not been able to confirm from official DGT sources whether the practical exam is conducted in English or whether you can bring an interpreter. The English options on DGT forms we reviewed relate to the theory exam. Before you book, ask your driving school or your Jefatura de Tráfico directly, and ask who pays for an interpreter if one is allowed.
Fees, attempts and what happens if you fail
The official fee is DGT Tasa 2.1: 94,05 €, shown on the DGT electronic headquarters. It covers two attempts. If you are declared not suitable, the test stops and you receive the result. After two failed attempts you must submit a new application and pay a new tasa. Check the current amount before you pay.
A passed theory result is valid for 2 years, so plan to book the practical test within that window.
How to prepare
- Know the theory well first: the practical test checks the same rules you studied, applied on the road.
- Practise urban and interurban driving: the test mixes both, so do not practise only on quiet streets.
- Rehearse the vehicle checks: know where the controls and safety items are before the examiner asks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to pass the theory test before the practical test?
Yes. The practical test (prueba de control de aptitudes y comportamientos en circulación) is taken after you have passed the theory exam. Check the current requirements on sede.dgt.gob.es before you book, because the rules for your situation can depend on your permit and history.
Can I book the practical test myself, without a driving school?
Yes, in principle. Most candidates go through a driving school (autoescuela), which normally submits the application for them. The DGT also allows private candidates (por libre) to apply directly. In practice you will probably still need a driving school for the photo voucher (talón-foto) if you are sitting the practical test by yourself. Confirm the exact steps with your local Jefatura or by calling 060.
How many faults can I make on the practical test?
The DGT scoring criteria use three categories: eliminatoria (serious, dangerous), deficiente (significant) and leve (minor). You are declared not suitable (NO APTO) with one eliminatoria fault; with two deficiente faults; with one deficiente and five leve faults; or with ten leve faults.
What is the minimum driving time for a permiso B practical test?
The DGT criteria set a minimum of 25 minutes of driving on open roads for permiso B, within a total slot of 30 minutes. That total includes checking in, the vehicle safety checks, any special manoeuvres and giving you the result. The route mixes urban and interurban roads.
Can the practical test be taken in English, or with an interpreter?
We could not confirm this from official DGT sources. The English-language options we found on DGT forms apply to the theory exam. Ask your driving school or your Jefatura de Tráfico before you book whether the practical exam can be conducted in English and whether an interpreter is allowed, and who pays for one.
How much does the practical test cost, and how many attempts do I get?
The official fee is DGT Tasa 2.1, 94,05 € as published on the DGT electronic headquarters. It covers two attempts. If you fail twice, you need a new application and a new fee. Check the current amount on sede.dgt.gob.es before you pay.
What happens if I fail the practical test?
Once the examiner declares you not suitable (NO APTO), the test ends and you receive the result. You can retake it, but the tasa covers two attempts in total. After two failed attempts you must apply again and pay a new tasa. Your driving school can tell you how many attempts are left on your application.
How long is a passed theory test valid?
A passed DGT theory result is valid for 2 years. You must pass the practical test within that window, or the theory result expires and you must retake the theory exam.
