Spanish Practical Driving Test: How It Works and What to Expect

Published •Updated
Quick answer (TL;DR): The Spanish practical driving test is the on-road exam for the B licence (permiso B). The open-road drive lasts at least 25 minutes, faults are graded as eliminatoria, deficiente or leve, and results appear from 17:00 the day after the exam. Official sources do not confirm English or interpreters for the practical test.

What is the Spanish practical driving test?

The Spanish practical driving test is the on-road exam that candidates for the Spanish B licence (permiso B) must pass. Under Royal Decree 818/2009, the Reglamento General de Conductores (RGC), the examiner grades it apto (pass) or no apto (fail). It comes after the theory test.

Before you can book, you need a psychophysical report (informe de aptitud psicofísica) from an authorised medical centre. According to the DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico), this report expires 90 working days (90 días hábiles) after it is issued, so book your exam while it is still valid.

Many candidates book their slot through their autoescuela (driving school). Slots depend on the local office or centre, so ask your school early rather than waiting until the report is close to expiry.

How long does the practical driving test last?

For the B licence, the open-road part of the practical test must last at least 25 minutes. Annex VI of RD 818/2009 sets this as a minimum, so a drive that ends earlier does not meet the rule. Classes A1, A2 and B+E have the same 25-minute minimum, while other classes need 45 minutes.

The 25 minutes count only the open-road drive. The regulation does not give a total length for the whole appointment, so ask your autoescuela what to expect on the day.

For practice, this means a useful session should include a full open-road route of at least 25 minutes, not a short loop around the block. Short sessions still help with specific skills such as junctions and parking, but they do not prepare you for sustained concentration over the full drive.

During the open-road drive, a professor sits at the dual controls of the car, except for motorcycles, under Article 55.1 of RD 818/2009. Article 55.3 makes that professor, or the accompanying person, responsible for road safety during the drive.

How is the practical driving test graded?

The DGT grades each fault in the practical test as eliminatoria (automatic fail), deficiente (serious) or leve (minor). A candidate is not apto if they commit one eliminatoria, two deficientes, one deficiente plus five leves, or ten leves. These rules are in Annex VI, section C, of RD 818/2009.

CategorySpanish termWhat it covers
Automatic faileliminatoriaAny behaviour or breach of the rules that endangers the candidate or other people. One is enough to fail.
Serious faultdeficienteBehaviour that obstructs traffic or notably hampers it, including keeping unsafe distances from other vehicles.
Minor faultleveA breach of the rules that is neither eliminatoria nor deficiente, including incorrect handling of the controls.

The thresholds for a not apto result are:

  • One eliminatoria
  • Two deficientes
  • One deficiente and five leves
  • Ten leves

Because minor faults add up, a smooth and consistent drive matters as much as avoiding one major error. A candidate who makes ten small mistakes fails just as surely as one who makes a single eliminatoria fault, so think about the whole drive rather than only the dangerous moments.

A dangerous mistake can also end the test early. Under Article 49.3 of RD 818/2009, driving errors or dangerous behaviour that threaten the exam car can stop the test and produce a no apto result. Under Article 53.1, the outcome is simply apto or no apto.

When do you get the practical test result?

Practical test results are published the day after the exam, from 17:00. You can check them on the DGT sede electrónica (online headquarters) with your DNI or NIE, date of birth, exam date and permit class. Results remain available for 15 days.

TestWhen the result appears
Theory on a computerThe same afternoon, from 17:00
Theory on paperThe day after, from 17:00
PracticalThe day after, from 17:00

Some guides say the miDGT app also shows results. Confirm this on the DGT sede before you rely on it. If your result does not appear, go to your autoescuela so that they can notify the DGT.

What happens if you fail the practical driving test?

A failed attempt does not end the process straight away. The tasa 2.1 fee of 94,05 € gives you two convocatorias (exam attempts). The DGT's fee guidance says the fee applies to each permit requested, and the sede's application form for the exam confirms the two-attempt rule.

After two failed attempts, you generally need a new application and a new fee to continue. The count covers both the theory and the practical test, so it is worth passing the theory before you book the practical.

A passed test remains valid for two years under Article 53 of RD 818/2009. Ask the Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico (provincial traffic office) or your autoescuela about any waiting period before a retry. The official sources checked for this article do not set one, so confirm it before you book.

Can you take the driving test in Spain in English?

The DGT theory test for the B licence can be taken in English, along with French, German, Spanish and the co-official languages, according to the DGT's 2025 driving-licence manual. There is no official source we checked that confirms the same for the practical test, or that an interpreter may be present.

Driving schools and motoring websites say the practical test is conducted in Spanish or a Spanish co-official language. These are not official sources, so confirm this before you book.

The language question is separate from the theory test. The theory test is taken on a computer or on paper, and the language is chosen when you apply, on the official application form (Mod. 04). The practical test is a conversation in the car with an examiner, so the language of the instructions matters more on the road than it does in the classroom. Even if an English-speaking instructor helps you prepare, the examiner's instructions on the day may be in Spanish.

To plan around the language question:

  1. Ask your autoescuela (driving school) whether an English-speaking instructor or examiner is possible in your area.
  2. Contact the Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico before you book the practical slot, and ask the question in writing if you can.
  3. Learn the road instructions in the glossary below, so you can follow the drive in Spanish whatever the arrangements.

Which Spanish phrases might an examiner use?

Examiners and instructors use standard road phrases during the drive. The table lists common Spanish phrases with their English meanings. It is a set of common phrases, not an official DGT list, and examiners may use other wording.

SpanishEnglish meaning
ArranquePull away
Gire a la derechaTurn right
Gire a la izquierdaTurn left
Siga rectoGo straight ahead
En la próxima rotonda, tome la segunda salidaAt the next roundabout, take the second exit
Tome la primera a la izquierdaTake the first turning on the left
IncorpóreseJoin or merge into the traffic
Cambie de carrilChange lane
Ceda el pasoGive way (yield)
PareStop
Estacione / AparquePark
Marcha atrásReverse
Dé la vueltaMake a U-turn
Reduzca la velocidadSlow down
Mantenga la distanciaKeep your distance

Ask your instructor to practise these phrases with you in the car. Repeating the directions until you respond without thinking helps on the day.

How should you prepare for the practical driving test?

Practise everyday road situations with your instructor, including roundabouts, junctions, lane changes and reversing. The fault categories above show what the examiner judges: incorrect handling of the controls, keeping safe distances and obeying the rules all count.

Use the grading system to set your priorities. Start with eliminatoria faults, the behaviour that endangers you or other people, because one of them ends the test. Then work on deficiente faults, which obstruct traffic, and finally on the leve faults that add up over the drive. Calm, predictable driving usually helps with all three categories at once.

In the weeks before the exam, keep a simple log of what went wrong on each practice drive. If the same kind of mistake keeps appearing, such as late mirror checks or hesitant roundabout entries, that is the habit to fix first. Ask your instructor to give you feedback after each session, and note the Spanish instruction that caused confusion so you can practise it again.

  1. Drive a route of at least 25 minutes on open roads with your instructor at least once before the exam.
  2. Practise the glossary phrases until you can act on each one without hesitating.
  3. Keep your psychophysical report valid until your exam date.
  4. Confirm the exam time, place and language arrangements with your autoescuela a few days before.
